BMI is a screening tool, not a medical diagnosis. It doesn't account for muscle mass, age, or bone density. Consult a healthcare provider for personal advice.

About this tool

BMI — Body Mass Index — is calculated by dividing weight in kilograms by the square of height in metres. The result places you in one of four WHO categories: Underweight (below 18.5), Healthy weight (18.5–24.9), Overweight (25–29.9), or Obese (30 and above). It's the screening tool doctors, insurers and researchers use globally as a first approximation of weight-related health risk.

This calculator supports both metric (kg and cm) and imperial (pounds, feet and inches), converting automatically so the result is identical regardless of which unit system you use. Beyond the BMI number and category, it tells you the healthy weight range for your specific height — the actual numbers, not just a percentile — which is the practical figure most people want from the calculation.

One important caveat, displayed on the tool: BMI is a population-level screening tool, not a personal diagnosis. It doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, age, sex or ethnicity — a very muscular person may register as Overweight, and an older adult may carry metabolically risky weight within the Healthy range. Use it as one data point; a healthcare provider gives the full picture.

Frequently asked questions

What is a healthy BMI?

According to WHO guidelines, a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is classified as healthy weight. Below 18.5 is Underweight, 25–29.9 is Overweight, and 30 or above is Obese. These thresholds apply to adults and are the same globally.

Is BMI accurate for athletes and muscular people?

No — BMI doesn't distinguish between fat and muscle. Athletes and people with high muscle mass often register as Overweight or Obese despite having very low body fat. For them, other measurements like body fat percentage are more informative.

Does BMI apply to children?

Not directly — children's healthy BMI ranges vary by age and sex. This calculator uses adult WHO thresholds. For children and teenagers, a paediatric BMI-for-age chart or a healthcare provider's assessment is needed.

What's the difference between metric and imperial inputs?

None in the result — this calculator converts your imperial inputs (lbs, feet and inches) to metric internally before calculating, so the BMI figure is identical regardless of which unit system you use.
